Carlos Calero was born into a household where animals were always part of the family, from chickens, dogs, cats, and rabbits... to cows, and of course, horses. From a very young age, a great passion for horses was evident in him, animals for which he felt tremendously attracted and with which he could spend many hours of the day admiring them, observing their behavior, and trying to interact with them.
"I remember traveling in my father's truck, who took me to school every day, and counting the horses I saw on the way. Without a doubt, the more horses I counted, the happier my days were."
Carlos spent a lot of time watching how horse trainers in the area did their work, taking notes and asking questions, from which he did not receive great answers.
"I grew up seeing how horses were a fundamental part of my family's cattle ranches, and also influenced by movies like The Lone Ranger or series like Zorro. I was impressed by the relationship he had with his horse 'Tornado,' which he could summon just by whistling. From that time on, the rider-horse relationship began to be a passion for me."
He began taming/training horses on his father's farm at a very young age, simply out of passion, achieving very good results. He learned during those times, through the few books available on horse training or ethology.
In his adolescence, he enjoyed the taming process and everything related to horses; his passion for them had grown so much and so quickly that he was very clear that he would study Veterinary Medicine, solely to be able to heal and care for them.
"I remember great books that helped me understand better everything I was doing. I could understand how horses communicated, how their brain works, and above all, how I could learn to teach them."
Among the books that had the most influence on Carlos are "The Mind of the Horse" 2000 by Lucy Rees, "The Logic of Horses" 2010 by Lucy Rees, "Join-Up," "Horses Sense for People" 2000 by Monty Roberts, "The Man Who Listens to Horses" 2002 also by Monty Roberts, all highly recommended for all horse enthusiasts.
Still a teenager, what started as a hobby turned into a job. Some friends and family decided to trust Carlos to tame, train, and correct behaviors in their horses.
"While finishing high school, I used part of my afternoons to dedicate them to the horses. I enjoyed watching them interact freely and trying every day to earn their trust."
His life took a big turn when he started university; near the veterinary science faculty, one of the most important breeding and training centers in Venezuela, MEDANITO BREEDING CENTER, was located. He decided to go there to offer himself as a volunteer and learn a little more, specifically about WESTERN SPORTS.
At this renowned center, he met the owner, Don Emilio Llamozas, who had vast experience in the quarter horse breed and in disciplines such as Reining, Working Cow Horse, and Cutting.
Don Emilio did not hesitate for a second to lend a hand to Carlos, helping and supporting him in his growth in horse training, while studying veterinary medicine.
In his desire to learn, he attended personal clinics with Cutting and Reining trainers, each of which provided him with new ideas and ways of thinking about horse training.
After working with family and friends' horses, Carlos began working at the largest quarter horse breeding and training center in Venezuela, VENEZUELA WESTERN.
"VW can easily be considered one of the centers with the most important equestrian and sports facilities in Latin America."
Carlos arrived at VW thanks to the opportunity offered by its owner Juan Carlos Rojas. Carlos considers Juan to be a fundamental pillar in his career. Juan gives him the opportunity to train 5 horses, and initially, everything went very well, until the moment when Carlos began to take on more and more responsibilities.
He managed the entire health and well-being area of the horses, treating most of the pathologies and overseeing the sanitary control of the stud farm. Later, reproduction and finally, the general management of the VW headquarters. All this alongside the horse and foal training process of the breeding center, with which they participated in national western sports championships.
His stay at VW allowed him for many years to meet many clients and make great friendships.
A couple of years later, he decided to venture to Colombia to take a course in reproductive biotechnology, and during his stay, he had the opportunity to participate in some championships, where his performance caught the attention of some breeders who offered him the possibility to train their horses, such as Hipica Santa Cruz through Mr. Luis Cruz and MarVerde Quarter Horses through the Cleves family.
Over time, he came to have more than 30 horses in training and with the pride of participating in the most important events in the sister country of Colombia, being part of the best teams and breeding farms.
"VW Ranch, Hipica Santa Cruz, Marver Quarter Horses, La Chaconera Ranch, JJ Ranch, Team Llano West among many others, to which I today thank and remember with great esteem, since besides being great friends, they were also great teammates with whom I managed to win great events such as: Champion of the 'National Quarter Horse Fair,' an event endorsed by AQHA. Runner-up in the Binational Apart and Cattle Penning, as well as multiple Team Penning finals and Cutting Championships and runner-ups."
Trayectoria Personal
From that moment on, Carlos's life changed, and the horses took him to countries like Panama, Brazil, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the USA, where he managed to train, compete, and meet many new friends and clients whom he continuously maintains and advises, including El Sombrero Stables in Spain and great masters from whom he continues to learn today, such as Jonatan Rogers, NCHA Hall of Fame, and Wes Ahslock, a trainer who holds the record for selling two-year-olds at the NCHA auction, selling Tinman for $500,000 in 2018 and Wood be Magic for $1 million in 2020, a filly he had the privilege of continuously riding as she was part of the WLA Performance Horses Staff.
In my first NCHA Futurity sale, I achieved an average sale price of $110,000 per horse, featuring notable horses such as AS IM IS, ANVIL, MVP ON IVE, and HOTT ABRA. Since then, I have remained committed to expanding my knowledge of horses and specialize in training two-year-olds. I also oversee teaching projects for riders and trainers while developing my own line of products and services for the equine industry.
